IT WAS past midnight, and I could not sleep. I stood outside Ishmael’s door, watching him in the moonlight.

Sam padded softly down the hall. He’d thrown on a bathrobe as a small concession to modesty.

“Hen, you need to go to bed. It’s a school night.”

“I know,” I said.

“Please, Hen.” He pulled on my arm.

“Leave me alone.”

“He’s not going anywhere.”

“I just don’t understand how Daddy could have done something like this. I really don’t understand, Sam. And why didn’t Sarah tell me?”

Sam sighed. I had already asked these questions a hundred times.

“He’s my little brother, Sam. How am I supposed to feel about that?”

“Let’s go to bed. Please. It’s late.”

“And all this time, I hated Mama for what she did. I was so mad at her! I didn’t even want to go to their funerals. I just don’t understand—”

“Come on, Hen.”

“I can’t sleep.”

“You need to sleep.”

“I don’t understand any of this.”
